For optimal athletic performance hydration is a must. If you ride off road including motorcycles or atv’s, and have been giving careful consideration to a hydration (drinking system) scheme to keep your body cool, read on.

All all over America racers and casual riders similar use hydration systems to ride longer and harder.

What is hydration anyway? Hydration is specified as a normal body liquid level. The humane body requires a sure amount of liquid each day to function properly. Off road riders gain from adequate liquid intake in a lot of ways.

Increased physical performance and endurance come with proper hydration. Another gain of adequate hydration is the capacity to retain mental toughness through periods of high physical exertion.

Hydration systems consist of a reservoir (to hold fluid) with a tube and bite valve that fits neatly into a backpack type strap system. This quintessentially slips over the riders’ shoulders and is scarcely noticed while riding. The reservoirs hold 45-100oz. of hydrating fluids depending on the model chosen. A typical system is shown below. Note the model underneath has commodious zippered pockets to hold little items such as keys, cell phones, energy bars or tools.

The minimum daily liquid intake varies with age and action level but is in general equivalent to four 8-ounce glasses of water per day. Off road riders require 2-3 times that.

Exercise induced dehydration (lower than normal body liquid level) may lead to decreased aerobic endurance, increased body temperature and increased heart rate. Muscles fatigue more quickly and become prone to cramping.

Here is how you may keep yourself hydrated when riding off road:

· Drink 8 to 10 8ounce glasses of water per day

· Drink extra water before, for the duration of (using a hydration system) and after exercise

· Avoid drinks with caffeine (coffee, cola) that may actually increase dehydration by causing a higher urine output

· Avoid alcoholic beverages which may also cause higher urine outputs consequently leading to dandier dehydration


As always, listen to your body. Fatigue,dizziness,rapid heart rate and even nausea may result no matter how hydrated you are. If these sensations or changes take place stop your ride, find some shade, lie down and put your feet up.
