With the release of the movie “Happy Feet”, young kids have become fascinated with penguins. These special little birds, that live in the coldest regions of the world are finelooking interesting creatures. I have dug up 7 interesting facts with regards to penguins that you may percentage with your kids.
Birds Who Can’t Fly
Penguins are birds who are no longer capable to fly, but are great swimmers and divers instead. Their wings have morphed into flippers and their torpedo-shapes body allows them to swim beneath water at high speeds. This also causes them to waddle on land.
Devoted Parents
Little baby penguins have two devoted parents. Unlike a great deal of other species, specially other birds, the fathers are very involved in the procedure of hatching the egg and taking care of the baby penguins. Mom and Dad will take turns warming the egg and searching for food.
All It Takes Is A Little Body Heat
In the cold climate that penguins live it, keeping the egg warm is an necessary task for penguin parents. In a lot of penguin species, the dads will remainder the egg on their feed, covering it with their belly flap to keep the egg warm. When it gets very cold, all the dads huddle together to keep themselves and their eggs warm.
The Special Penguin Gland
Since penguins spend a good bit of their live in the ocean, they are perpetually swallowing sea water. A particular gland behind their beak helps them filter out the salt from the water. They also eat snow as a source of fresh water.
Sleeping At Sea
Living on the ice may be rather dangerous, with natural predators lurking around each corner. Because of this a lot of penguin species don’t go back on the ice or arid land to sleep. Instead they take little naps in the water instead.
Huddle To Keep Warm
When male penguins stay on land to take care of the egg, they will huddle together to stay warm. Penguins rotate from the outside to the warmer inside of the huddle. This allows them to keep their body temperature high sufficient to incubate the egg until the baby penguin is born.
Using Sign Language
Penguins use a sign language of sorts to commune with each other. They will wave their flippers and move their heads to “talk” to other penguins in the group.

Too tall for my big 2-year-old!
By Michael E. Lee
We received this bike as a gift for our two-year-old daughter. She is very tall (beyond 97th percentile) for her age (36.5 inches at 24 months), so we all expected this bike to fit her immediately. Unfortunately, when she sits on the seat her toes *just* touch the floor. So even with shoes, there is no way she’ll be confident enough to ride this anytime soon.
I’m not sure how Smart Gear can claim that this bike is for “two years to 60 lbs” when my two-year-old (literally the tallest 2-year-old any of our friends has ever seen) is too short for it.
In addition, the rear axle arrived bent and the back wheel won’t freely spin. But I’ve contacted Smart Gear and I imagine they’ll replace it without a problem. Other it seems like a solid toy.
Normally I wouldn’t review this yet (since we haven’t really used it), but I thought some parents would benefit from this height info…

great gift for young female athlete
By active grandmother
Smart gear balance bike for girls was well made, appealed to my granddaughter’s feminine and athletic traits.
Her father and 2 older brothers enjoyed assembling it and teaching her how to ride. I searched a long time for a
gift for a young girl what wasn’t related to being a princess, a housekeeper or a hairdresser!

Great balance bike
By E. K. Martin
Cuter than the rest, and very well made, with solid wood and rubber. I prefer it to the skuut and the like a bike (both of which friends’ kids have). My daughter was a bit hesitant at first to make the switch from her trike, but soon got the hang of it. We’ve had it several months now, and it looks like it will hold up well to wear and tear.
